From July 31 to August 4 2017, several of AmCham’s prominent member companies supported the Somali Youth Outreach Program – an integration initiative between AmCham, the U.S. Embassy and Danish Human Appeal, which helps young Somali-Danish students focus on education and better understand the opportunities within the Danish labor market.

The project engaged a select group of Somali-Danish teens aged 13 to 17 years, who had the opportunity to visit a number of international companies, in order to explore what it takes to succeed in a professional workplace and the opportunities it gives the individual.

"The initiative is a good example of how young people can benefit from getting engaged in the business community. By visiting these exciting companies, young people learn a lot about committing themselves in an international workplace and seeing the opportunities a good education can provide them later in life," says AmCham Denmark's Stephen Brugger.

Company participants were also enthusiastic about the initiative. At the pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb, Country Director Anders Thelborg sought to inspire the Danish teens to finish their education and put their talent to good work. The company had arranged for a facility tour and presentations by various employees who described their path to employment. Thelborg says: “We were immensely pleased at Bristol-Myers Squibb to host 20 passionate, thoughtful and curious teens as part of this program, discussing science, education, the pharmaceutical industry, entrepreneurship and so much more. It was extremely inspiring and valuable to me and my colleagues, and we would certainly repeat this experience again.”

The international biotech company Biogen hosted an interactive quiz where the teens had the opportunity to ask questions to a wide range of Biogen employees; from HR managers & laboratory technicians, to administrative and security personnel, in order to solve a puzzle.

“We find it important to show these kids that there are many educational routes to working at Biogen. We have employees with all sorts of backgrounds and responsibilities in our company. They are excited to engage in a dialogue with the young people; tell them about their backgrounds, career choices and the many interesting projects that they work on”, says Biogen’s Director Birgitte Thygesen.
