Roche Refugee Career Mentoring Program Shows Great Results
In 2016, Roche launched their first career mentoring program,which has shown great results

Roche employees successfully assist 6 highly skilled refugees in getting closer to the Danish labor market through the Refugee Mentoring Program.

The Refugee Mentoring Program has been developed by Foreningen Nydansker with support from AmCham Denmark and the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen, and is part of a larger initiative on how businesses can be key contributors to the integration of highly skilled refugees.

Roche began this CSR initiative in November 2016, where six Roche volunteer mentors were paired with six highly skilled refugees based on their professional backgrounds.

The mentoring program has been rewarding for both mentors and mentees, as well as Roche as a company. Linda Vestergaard, HR Director and mentor, describes how the interest amongst her colleagues has been overwhelming: “There is no doubt that launching this CSR-program has been of great value to our company. It has created a feeling of pride and given insight into the refugee situation in Denmark.  It has been noticed and discussed in the company and we have experienced great support from our colleagues”.

Roche A/S’ new General Manager Richard Wright says: “Having recently moved with Roche to my new position in Denmark, I have been very impressed and excited to hear about this excellent initiative. I am very enthusiastic that this cooperation between Foreningen Nydansker, AmCham and Roche will bring mutual benefit to the mentees as well as the mentors from my organization.”

All mentees express that being matched with a mentor from Roche has been beneficial and that they now feel more structured and positive towards their future career. One of the mentees says: “I have benefited from my mentor’s professional experience in accessing Danish professional networks and received tips on how to create a professional CV. I feel very optimistic to move forward and to achieve work related goals and develop my educational level.”

Results: 1 mentee is now in full-time employment, 1 mentee is in wage subsidies employment, 2 mentees are enrolled in university and 1 mentee is enrolled in another educational program.
