Political Majority Settles on New Defense Agreement

The government parties, Danish People’s Party, the Social Democrats and the Social Liberal Party have agreed on a new defense settlement aimed at strengthening the Danish Defense.

The agreement will add DKK 12.8 billion from 2018 to 2023 to the Danish defense.

The main elements of the new defense agreement are:

  • DKK 1.4 billion will be allocated to fight cybercrime: The government will establish a ‘Cyber Situation Center’ and the Center for Cyber Security will strengthen its analytical and preventive competencies.

  • A new defense brigade consisting of 4000 soldiers will be established as part of a NATO-led effort.

  • The agreement adds 500 more draftees (mainly voluntary recruits) to the Danish defense per year. The draftees will be enrolled in the Royal Danish Life Guards.

  • The Danish defense will add 700 new employees to its staff on in Central Jutland (200), Southern Denmark (400) and on Bornholm (100).

  • More resources are allocated to international rebuilding and stabilizing efforts. These funds will be increased from half a billion Danish Kroner to DKK 750 million per year.
