McDonald’s recognized for showing innovation and growth in a mature market while actively investing in its employees.

An independent jury consisting of Sten Scheibye, Chairman for the Danish Trade Council, Lars Nørby Johansen, Chairman for the Danish Growth Council; and Steen Thomsen, Professor at Copenhagen Business School has selected McDonald's Denmark as the recipient of AmCham Denmark's 2012 Foreign Company of the Year.

The award ceremony took place during AmCham’s annual fall Member Reception, which was hosted by Lord Mayor Frank Jensen at Copenhagen Town Hall’s beautiful “Festsal”.  Event sponsors were RiskPoint and Scandinavian Airlines.  Stephen Cristina, the U.S. Chargé d'Affaires, announced the winner in front of the more than 100 expectant reception guests.

According to the jury, McDonald’s has shown impressive growth despite being in a market that’s been seriously challenged by the financial crisis. They have increased their effort to be innovative and their commitment to CSR, not least in the people area, where McDonald’s is the largest employer and trainer of youth in Denmark. With investments of more than DKK 160 mill. in 2011, McDonald’s expects to continue to increase the turnover per restaurant, the number of restaurants and the number of employees.

Jury spokesman Sten Scheibye says "We particularly want to emphasize the role of McDonald's as a large employer and service provider actively investing in employee education and productivity growth". Being a major provider of meals entails many challenges and Scheibye adds that "McDonald's excels in corporate social responsibility, and has adapted constructively to an increased emphasis on health in Denmark."

Managing Director for McDonald's Denmark, Stephen Shillington, says "We are proud and delighted to be named as AmCham’s Foreign Company of the Year. By giving this great recognition to McDonald's, the jury and AmCham send a strong message that it is possible to be a truly American brand while creating a close bond with the Danes and contributing positively to Danish society."

"The first Danish McDonald's restaurant opened on Vesterbrogade in 1981, and today we employ more than 4,000 employees in our 84 restaurants in Denmark. We have more than 30 years of experience with what the Danes like and have adjusted our way of doing things and our menu to reflect it. We are convinced that this is why we succeed in creating growth and opportunities", Stephen Shillington adds.

AmCham Denmark is proud to recognize McDonald's as the 2012 Foreign Company of the Year. "This prestigious award recognizes the importance and positive impact made by foreign companies investing in Denmark - which comprise only 1.2% of private sector companies, but surprisingly create 20% of the private sector jobs," says Stephen Brugger, AmCham Executive Director.

"Currently, Denmark is suffering from a decline in foreign investments and a widening of the gap between in and outbound investments. Therefore, it is essential to highlight the importance of foreign companies by telling their success stories - and this year's finalists provided the jury with several great stories to choose from," adds Brugger.

AmCham would like to congratulate this year's other finalists: Better Place, Biogen Idec, MSD, UL International Demko and Verizon Enterprise Solutions - who were all very qualified and made the jury's decision extremely difficult. Read about this year's finalists.

McDonald’s Denmark joins a prestigious list of previous award winners including: Siemens (2011), Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers (2010), Iron Mountain (2009) and GlaxoSmithKline (2008).
