Biogen Idec recognized for creating growth and jobs by investing in manufacturing.

An independent jury consisting of Sten Scheibye, Chairman for the Danish Trade Council, Lars Nørby Johansen, Chairman for the Danish Growth Council; and Steen Thomsen, Professor at Copenhagen Business School has selected Biogen Idec Manufacturing as the recipient of AmCham Denmark's 2013 Foreign Company of the Year.

The award ceremony took place during AmCham’s annual Fall Member Reception, which was hosted by the City of Copenhagen and Mayor Anna Mee Allerslev at Copenhagen Town Hall’s beautiful “Festsal”.  Event sponsors were RiskPoint and Monjasa.

By naming Biogen Idec the jury has placed particular emphasis on the contribution to employment and job creation as well as investments in Denmark, and they point to Biogens Idec’s facility in Hillerød being one of the largest greenfield investments ever made by a foreign company – so far creating 525 high wage jobs, of which 150 were created in 2012.

Spokesman for the jury, Professor Steen Thomsen (CBS) says: "In a period of outsourcing and decline in manufacturing in general, it is remarkable - and very encouraging - that a large international company has chosen Denmark as a base for its European production". He adds: "It shows that with a strategic combination of investment, partnerships and innovation it is possible to maintain manufacturing jobs in Denmark."

Senior Director for Biogen Idec in Hillerød, Andy Stober expresses great pride in being awarded "Foreign Company of the Year". He says: “We see it as recognition of the importance of Biogen Idec’s growth by AmCham and the jury.” He adds: “Access to a skilled workforce was a key factor when we selected Denmark in 2001, and we are very pleased that we have been able to recruit more than 350 new highly skilled and dedicated employees over the latest 20 months.”

Andy Stober emphasizes the positive and flexible cooperation with Danish partners and public authorities, especially the Hillerød Municipality. He adds: "For us, a foreign company investing significantly in manufacturing, predictability and a holistic business approach are essential conditions."

AmCham Denmark is proud to recognize Biogen Idec as the 2013 Foreign Company of the Year. "This prestigious award recognizes the importance and positive impact made by foreign companies investing in Denmark - which comprise only 1.2% of private sector companies, but surprisingly create more than 20% of the private sector jobs," says Stephen Brugger, AmCham Executive Director.

"Currently, Denmark is suffering from a drought in foreign investments and a decline in manufacturing in particular. Therefore, it is essential to highlight the importance of foreign companies by telling their success stories - and this year's finalists provided the jury with several great stories to choose from," adds Brugger.

AmCham would like to congratulate this year's other finalists: GSK Pharma, Hess, Medtronic and SEB - who were all very qualified and made the jury's decision extremely difficult. Read about this year's finalists.

Biogen Idec joins a prestigious list of previous award winners including: McDonald’s (2012), Siemens (2011), Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers (2010), Iron Mountain (2009) and GlaxoSmithKline (2008).
