Political agreement on the Implementation of a Green Denmark
The Danish Government along with SF, Liberal Alliance, The Conservative People’s Party, and the Social Liberal Party reached an Agreement on the Implementation of a Green Denmark, a cross-party initiative aimed at addressing climate, biodiversity, and water quality challenges.
Key highlights include:
- Land Use Transformation: Convert 10% of Denmark’s land to nature and forests by 2045. This includes the withdrawal of 140.000 hectares of carbon-rich lowland soils and 250,000 hectares for new forests.
- Climate Goals: Reduce agricultural emissions to meet a 55-65% reduction by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, contributing to Denmark’s goal of 70% reduction.
- Biodiversity and Nature Conservation: Establish up to 21 national parks by 2030, and add funding for protecting marine and terrestrial ecosystems.
- Water Quality: Paradigm change regarding nitrogen management to ensure compliance with the EU Water Framework Directive by 2030.
- Sustainable Agriculture: Promote plant-based food production and organic farming with significant financial support.
- Funding and Implementation: Allocate over 43 billion for initiatives spanning nature restoration, carbon reduction, and local agricultural adjustments.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Emphasize local engagement and establish regional councils for tailored environmental planning.
This historic agreement, which is a global first of its kind, sets a roadmap for transforming Denmark’s landscape and food systems, balancing ecological preservation with economic resilience.
