Bech Bruun: New European Entry/Exit System (EES)

Denmark is now – as part of the EU agreement – implementing the new European Entry/Exit System (EES), which aims to strengthen border control within the Schengen Area. Our expectation is that the introduction of the system will lead to more violation cases.

With this new system, traditional passport stamping will be replaced by automated electronic registration. The EES will record travelers’ personal information, passport details, as well as the dates and places of entry and exit.

The system applies to all non-EU nationals, including travelers who do not require a visa for short stays (up to 90 days within a 180-day period).

What this means for travelers:

• Upon the first entry into the Schengen Area after the system is implemented, the traveler’s fingerprints and a facial image will be captured electronically.

• For future trips, border control will be faster, as the biometric data will already be registered in the system.

• The EES will automatically calculate the permitted length of stay, helping to prevent overstays and ensure compliance with the duration rules.
