HR Forum: Are Great Leaders Born or Built?

AmCham Denmark members and guest gathered for a thought-provoking session focused on redefining leadership in today’s complex business landscape. The event was hosted by SAS and invited participants to challenge traditional leadership models and dive into the skills that define exceptional leaders. Are leadership qualities something that people innately possess, ie  “Born Leaders”? Or can the skills be learned with time and experience?

Mikkel Severin, CEO of Mind Control, delivered a powerful keynote. In his talk, “EQ – Why Being Smart Is Not Enough?”, Severin talked about his insights into emotional intelligence and the profound influence it has on leadership success.

This was followed by compelling business case presentations from two prominent leaders:

  • Annelise Goldstein, Vice President of Global Leadership, Learning & Development at Novo Nordisk
  • Julie Mørch Nadelmann, Director of Global Partner Solutions at Microsoft Denmark

Both shared practical examples from their organizations, highlighting how empathy and emotional awareness have become key leadership tools in navigating uncertainty and fostering innovation.

The afternoon concluded with a panel discussion and Q&A session, where the speakers engaged in an open dialogue with the audience, reflecting on their own leadership journeys and offering advice. Participants then enjoyed a networking session, continuing the conversation in a more informal setting.

Whether you’re shaping future leaders or refining your own approach, this conversation gave you fresh insights into what it really takes to lead today.
