Denmark to Increase Defense Spending in the Arctic and Greenland

Denmark has agreed to increase defence spending by around 14 billion DKK. Further investment is expected to follow in the first half of 2025.

All Danish parties behind the Danish Defence Agreement, in collaboration with the Greenlandic and Faroese Governments, have agreed to expand Arctic defence capabilities. This includes the purchase of three Arctic naval vessels, long-range drones, expanded radar systems, and enhanced satellite coverage of Greenland. Additionally, investments will go toward military infrastructure upgrades in Greenland and the Faroe Islands to strengthen Denmark’s Arctic presence.

Geopolitical tensions, particularly Russian military activity in the Arctic and North Atlantic, have been cited as key motivations for the initiative. Furthermore, all parties have agreed to negotiate a second defence agreement within the next six months to expand Denmark’s Arctic defence capabilities further.

Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen has also confirmed that negotiations on the Danish Navy and broader defense strategy will take place in March.
